Can I use vinegar to remove carpet pet odor?

by DoItYourself Staff

Carpet pet odor is a fact of life for people who have both carpeting and pets. An occasional accident is very likely, and quick action can give a good outcome in preventing a permanent odor. Mix 1/4 cup white vinegar in a gallon of cold water to clean pet odors. Sponge it on, then blot the area until it is dry. As the solution dries and the vinegar smell evaporates, it will take the pet odor with it. You can also use this same amount of white vinegar in the solution tank of your carpet cleaner, if you wish to clean the entire room. Be sure to rinse completely and air dry.
