Can removing wallpaper with chemicals damage drywall?

by DoItYourself Staff

Using special chemicals while removing wallpaper from drywall becomes easy. First, attempt to remove the paper by stripping and scraping it off of the wall. If this does not work, then spray on a solution of equal parts fabric softener and warm water. Allow this to sit for a half hour before attempting to scrape the paper off of the walls. If the adhesive is very stubborn, the fabric softener solution may not be strong enough, and special chemicals will be needed. Apply the remover and once again scrape the paper from the wall. Scraping drywall can damage the surface, so be sure to repair any scratches or gouges before installing new paper or painting the wall.
