Can You Install Attic Exhaust Fans with a Ridge Vent?

by DoItYourself Staff

Attic exhaust fans are used to help circulate the air in the attic. This will keep the structure dry, and help regulate the temperature in a home. The decreased moisture will lengthen the life of the roof and reduce problems caused from mildew and mold. A nice benefit of proper ventilation is cooler homes during the summer. Ridge vents are different than other types of vents, and using fans in conjunction will require a different set up.

Is It Necessary to Use a Fan with Ridge Vents?

It's not necessary to use a fan with the ridge vents if you have adequate ventilation already. Continuous ridge vents don't need any help. If you have noticed a problem with ice formation during the winter months, or the tell tale signs of rot are starting, then by all means install the fan.

Placement

An attic fan will need to be placed in an area that will allow for maximum air circulation. Since ridge vents are located along the roofs ridge, you shouldn't place the fan on top of the ridge. Most professionals will tell you to place the fans closest to the highest point of the roof pitch as possible. If you have a steep roof, this may not be a simple DIY job.
