Can you put oil-based paint over latex paint?

by DoItYourself Staff

You have chosen an oil-based paint that is a perfect color for the redecorating of your home, but the surface you wish to paint is currently coated in latex paint. The good news is that oil-based paint will adhere if you prepare the old surface properly.

First, clean off all dust, grease and dirt. If you use soap and water to clean, be sure the water completely dries from the surface you will be painting. Lightly sand the surface. This will allow the new paint to bond better. Apply your primer coat. When it is thoroughly dry, apply your finish coat.
