Can You Use Heating Cables on Rubber Roofing Materials?
Rubber roofing materials are increasingly becoming popular owing to their numerous advantages over other roofing materials. Besides being a cheap option, these materials are also low on maintenance, highly durable and eco-friendly. Rubber roofs are also very easy to install and you can successfully do it by yourself.
Heating Cables
Heating cables resemble extension cords with thick rubber for insulation to make them waterproof. The cables are used on roofs during winter to prevent the accumulation of ice dams that can damage the roofs. When snow falls on the roof and does not melt, it blocks the drainage gutters and roof edges, leading to the formation of ice dams. When temperatures rise and the snow melts, the water does not drain efficiently, and seeps into the roof, thereby causing damage. Besides regular cleaning of your roof to get rid of leaves and other debris, installing heating cables is one other measure that will contribute to a durable roof.
Using Heating Cables on Rubber Roofing Materials
You can use heating cables on rubber roofing materials, through two options. You can decide to use either rubber roofing sheets, mostly used on flat roofs, or rubber tiles. These materials often last up to 50 years, withstanding different weather conditions that often include extreme temperatures. The materials can also withstand the heat from cables during the cold weather. To obtain efficient and effective service, secure the cables around the edges of the roof and inside the gutters. During winter, switch on electric power and the cables will emit heat that melts the snow on the roof and the gutters, ensuring proper drainage.
Installing Heating Cables
Before purchasing your heating cable, measure the perimeter of your roof to know the exact size of cable you will need. Using a ladder, climb to your roof and secure the cables around the edges of your roof and within the gutters. Plug the cable into the socket and once switched on it will carry the heat onto your roof. Rubber roofing materials generally have a good insulation mechanism that keeps the house warm during winter and cold during hot temperatures. Heating cables will compliment this property on rubber roofs. There are roof-heating cables with an automatic mechanism that regulates temperature on the outside and once the temperatures come down to freezing point, the cables automatically become active. Such cables facilitate efficient use of electricity only when necessary, saving a lot of power.
Maintenance of Heating Cables Used on Rubber Roofs
Heating cables that have heavy insulation require minimal maintenance. When used on rubber roofing materials, the cables do not require any special maintenance. During hot weather, ensure that the power source is off to save on electricity. Having taken care of snow during winter, you will have to clean your roof regularly as usual, to keep away debris that can also block the gutters and hinder proper drainage.
