Canning Glass Jar

by DoItYourself Staff

You remember how your grandmother always had a canning glass jar in her cupboard and usually several others to go with it? With our homes as busy as they are today, you are more likely to see a canning glass jar at a restaurant serving cola as a nostalgic decoration rather than in anyone’s cupboards full of jelly.

The canning glass jar that your grandmother used is the same one used today, for those of us who still like to can our fruits and vegetables.

Why use a Canning Glass Jar?

The canning glass jar was more about the lid than the jar. The lid would seal shut with a tight vacuum and then the screw lid secured around it to hold the lid in place. Metal was not an option as it would taint the food, and plastic would melt away as the boiling hot canning products were placed inside. The canning glass jar was the obvious option and has worked well for centuries.
