Canning Salt

by DoItYourself Staff

Canning salt has been used for preserving foods for years. When preserving foods at home, the canning salt offers benefits to the process and can help create some tasty foods.

What is Canning Salt?

Canning salt is a fine grained iodine free salt. It does not have the ingredients that ordinary table salt has to help it remain un-caked. The canning salt will not turn your vegetables or pickles a dark color when canned. You can preserve your foods with table salt, but they would not be as attractive as when preserved with canning salt.

Canning salt is used in preserving meats such as sausage, salt-cured hams and other meats.
Canning salt is also used in preserving meats like sausage. It is vital the cook use the specified amount of salt called for in the recipe so the meat (or pickles) will be safely preserved. You can find canning salt in most super markets or anywhere canning supplies are sold.
