Carbon Water Filter vs Iron Water Filter

by DoItYourself Staff

You may need a carbon water filter to purify your water supply. You must keep in mind that tap water is not always good to drink. This is because if the water is contaminated by some minerals or other substances, it may lead to sickness, especially in elderly people, pregnant women, babies and small children.

If you install a water filter to your home water supply, it will be safe for everyone to drink and use tap water. Or once you install a carbon water filter, your water supply will be much better and healthier to drink. Keep in mind that water filters can have different functions; they can rid the water from its pollutants or enhance its clear appearance and good taste. This is why you need to test your water first before you purchase a water filter. You can choose to buy a carbon water filter or an iron water filter.

Carbon Water Filters

This type of water filter seems to be the more efficient of the two types. You must always take a sample from your water and have it tested for quality in a laboratory. Water can contain traces of magnesium and sodium, but the most dangerous substance found in unfiltered tap water is lead, this is because it can cause poisoning to pregnant women. You can pay about $25 to have your water tested for the presence of lead particles in it.

It is highly recommended that you purchase a carbon water filter that satisfies standard 53 issued by the ANSI, also known as the American National Standard Institute. This means that your water filter is guaranteed to clean your water supply completely and leave no traces of hazardous substance. Such water filters will also help restore the taste of clear healthy water.

Iron Water Filters

Unlike their carbon counterparts, these iron water filters are specifically utilized to remove any iron traces from your water supply. You may require an iron water filter to clean the water that you have collected in your well. You must keep in mind that iron is found in abundance beneath the surface of the earth and when particles of it enter your water supply, the water usually carries them along through your household pipes after dissolving.

You can usually tell that your water supply is contaminated with iron by noticing stains in your home appliances i.e. dishwashers and washing machines. You can also find stains in your pipes and on your clothes as well. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, there should be no more than 0.3 ppm in your water.

Once you have installed an iron water filter in your home, you will never again notice orange or brown stains in your sinks and bathtubs. Your water will taste fresh and when you make tea or coffee, it will not take on a darker color.
