Caring For A Sprinkler Timer

Keeping your sprinkler timer in good working order is key to maintaining your lawn watering system, preventing excessive water bills and overtaxing the system. Like any other mechanical device, a sprinkler timer can benefit from some general care and maintenance throughout the year to ensure that it remains running in its best condition. Follow these tips to keep yours in working order.

Keep an Eye On the Intervals

You may have set your timer to spray at perfect intervals, but over time, the calibration can drift from its original settings. Since shorter periods of irrigation are more efficient than longer ones, monitor the intervals of your sprinklers and be sure to recalibrate as soon as any problems occur.

Watch the Batteries

When using a timer, try to use a model with a “low battery” indicator so that you know when your battery level is near depletion. The memory fails on these timers once the batteries do, so keep a copy of your watering schedule handy in case you need to reprogram the timer.

Winterize

If you live in an area that freezes in the winter, be sure that you turn the timer off as part of your winterizing routine. Leaving the timer on can cause immense damage to your sprinkler system as the pipes freeze and expand.
