A casement window is a window that opens out sideways, instead of just sliding up and down. A casement window is subject to a lot of weathering, and sometimes the window pan needs to be replaced. Replacing an old window pane can be a little dangerous, but it will help keep your home more insulated in the end.
- Step 1: Place a tarp outside where you plan on having the glass from the window fall.
- Step 2: Use a hammer to break out the glass while wearing safety equipment. Make sure to remove any pieces left behind.
- Step 3: Have a piece of glass cut that will fit your casement window and hold the glass in place with the old sash clips.
- Step 4: Cover the edges of the window liberally with putty. The putty can be smoothed over with a putty knife.
Cleaning a Casement Window
Sometimes your casement window doesn't need to be replaced; it just needs to be cleaned. Most debris can be removed with a damp wash cloth and warm water, but for more stubborn gunk you can use a scrubby pad. For dried on paint, use a wet razor to carefully scrape the paint off of the casement window.
