Ceiling Mounted Storage Installation in Three Steps

Ceiling mounted storage in a garage is a great way to free up floor space and store bulky or little used items.

Choose a Shelf Location

You’ll need to find a location on the garage ceiling where your storage rack can hang.  Make sure it is free of obstructions, such as the garage door, light fixtures or hanging bikes.

Attach to Studs

Use a stud finder (either electronic or magnetic) to locate the ceiling joists in the garage. For any garage organizer unit, it is imperative to hang heavy items from studs or joists, but with ceiling mounted storage, this step is even more important. Heavy items will quickly tear through drywall ceilings.

Use an electric drill or screwdriver to insert the mounting brackets and be sure the screws connect fully with the joists.

Adjust Shelf Height and Distribute Load

Most ceiling mounted storage in a garage allows you to adjust the depth of the shelf depending on how much clearance you have and what you’re storing on the shelves.  The adjustment is usually made with the use of a screwdriver or other simple tool.

Expect to pay from $65 for white wire ceiling mounted shelving to approximately $179 for super heavy-duty shelves that have extra capacity and can hold weights up to 150 or even 200 lbs.
