Ceiling Speaker Installation: Planning and Preparation

There are several steps which you should perform if you are planning on performing a ceiling speaker installation. 

1. Pick out the speakers you will use. The most effective speaker contains a pivoting tweeter and woofer. These will allow you to point each speaker toward the seating area for improved sound quality.
2. Select the locations where you plan to install the speakers. Remember, these locations may need to be adjusted. Using a stud finder or by tapping the ceiling, you may be able to find the rafter locations, but neither of these options are guaranteed to work. The hole cut for the speaker will be nearly as large as the speaker so you need at least that much clearance from any of the ceiling rafters.
3. Set up your tools and materials for easy access. These should include a drywall saw, drill, a half-inch paddle bit, strippers and wire.
