Cement and Concrete

by DoItYourself Staff

Cement and concrete are often used interchangeably but it should be understood that they are not one in the same. In fact, concrete is a material made of aggregates and paste. Cement is one of the aggregate materials used in concrete. By this definition, cement is a component or part of concrete. Concrete generally contains a mixture of 10 to 15 percent cement by volume.

How Concrete Is Used

Concrete is often used in driveways and for the foundations of homes. It can also be found in flooring and subflooring. The material is durable and long-lasting and is a common feature of most every home both old and new. Additional functional and creative uses for concrete exist based on the type of construction being done.

Pouring and Curing Concrete

Concrete is generally poured by a professional who understands the process of mixing the concrete, setting it in the foundation and curing the concrete. Concrete can be improperly cured when subjected to extreme temperatures. Careful attention to these types of details ensures that the concrete will be properly set.
