Chandelier Installation in 5 Easy Steps
what you'll need
- Chandelier
- Sturdy stepladder
- Wire nuts
- Light bulbs
- Electrical tape
- Screwdriver
- Mounting strap
A chandelier is an ornate lighting fixture that adds style to any room. Hang this timeless class in a living room, entrance or dining room where it will stand out and make a bold statement. Installing a chandelier is fairly easy, but due to the extra weight, the process requires special technique.
Step 1 – Turn Off Power
Before you begin, cut power off from the circuit since you will be working with electrical units. Place a piece of tape over the switch to prevent someone else from accidentally restoring the power.
Step 2 – Remove the Old Light Fixture
Place your stepladder just below the old light fixture. Carefully disconnect the wires to remove the fixture from the junction box.
Step 3 – The Junction Box
The ceiling junction box contains all the wiring in the ceiling. It must be strong enough to support the weight of the chandelier. If your new chandelier is much heavier than the previous fixture, you must replace the junction box to accommodate the weight.
If there is no junction box or you want to replace the current one, you need to drill a hole in the ceiling. Pass an expandable metal hanger through the hole and position it perpendicular to both the ceiling joists, so the ends can expand and dig into them firmly. Place a small bracket in the center of the hanger, and attach the junction box to it with bolts.
Thread the new hardware onto a mounting strap and the nipple into the center. Secure the mounting strap into the junction box using the existing screw holes.
Step 4 – Wiring the New Chandelier
While someone holds the chandelier for you, measure how low you want it to hang and adjust the chain and wires accordingly. Insert the wires into the electric box through the threaded nipple. Use wire nuts to connect the black wire of the chandelier to the black wire in the electric box. Do the same to connect both the white wires. Secure the nuts in place by wrapping electric tape over them.
Lift the escutcheon plate and thread the chandeliers collar nut onto the threaded nipple, tightening the nut by hand.
Step 5 – Final Check
Slowly release the chandelier to check how it hangs. Look over the wiring to make sure everything is secure, including the escutcheon plate.
Once you are comfortable with your handiwork, insert bulbs into the holders. Make sure the total wattage all the bulbs is 200 to 400 watts. Turn the power back on and enjoy your new chandelier for many years to come.
