Changing Fire Sprinkler Heads
Newer homes and businesses are required by law to have fire sprinkler heads installed for fire protection and safety. Out of the entire fire sprinkler system, the part that needs to be replaced or changed most frequently is the sprinkler head, either because of age or because the sprinkler heads have been recalled and need to be replaced with more functional heads. In some areas, changing or replacing fire sprinkler heads must be performed by an authorized fire safety worker.
Items Needed:
•Wrench
•Replacement Sprinkler Heads, including supporting mechanisms (nipples, cages, caps)
Step 1 – Locate Sprinkler Heads
Locate and identify where fire system sprinkler heads are currently installed in the home or business.
Step 2 – Determine How Many Fire System Sprinkler Heads to Replace
Determine which sprinkler heads need to be replaced. In some cases, the sprinkler heads can be interchanged as needed. However, some systems require that only one type of sprinkler head can be used and so it will be necessary to replace all of the sprinkler heads. In some cases, building and safety codes will require that all of the sprinkler heads will need to be replaced as fire systems are updated.
Step 3 – Purchase Sprinkler Head Supplies
Once you have determined how many sprinkler heads you will need to replace, you will need to purchase not only the new sprinklers, but also any supporting equipment like nipples, cages and caps.
Step 4 – Determine Fire Codes
In some areas, replacement and/or updating of fire sprinkler heads may only be performed by individuals authorized by the local fire department. Before you begin to change sprinkler heads, double check with your local building department or fire department that you are authorized to perform this type of maintenance.
Step 5 – Turn off the Water
Locate the water valve that supplies the water to the fire sprinkler system and turn it off before you begin replacing sprinkler heads.
Step 6 – Remove Old Sprinkler Head
You should replace each sprinkler head one at a time instead of attempting to replace them as an entire batch. Carefully remove the old sprinkler head by unscrewing or popping off the cap or cage that conceals the sprinkler from view. Using a screwdriver and a wrench, unscrew the sprinkler mechanism. As you remove the sprinklers detach the old nipple (if applicable) being careful not to break any pipes so that you do not have to replace water pipes in addition to the sprinkler heads.
Step 7 – Install the New Sprinkler Head
Once you have the old sprinkler removed, if the sprinkler has a nipple mechanism, attach it to the pipe and then carefully screw the new sprinkler head into place.
Either screw in or pop the new cap or cage into place over the new sprinkler.
Step 8 – Turn Water Back On
With the new sprinkler heads installed, turn the water back on at the water valve. If required by local building codes, arrange for inspection from a local building inspector for leak-testing and certification.
