Chicken Noodle Soup

by DoItYourself Staff

Chicken noodle soup is a common meal starter or a meal in itself. Although its two main ingredients are spelled out in the name, this type of soup can have many other ingredients and spices used to add different flavor sensations.

Chicken noodle soup stock

Chicken noodle soup requires, first and foremost, a chicken-based stock. Cooks use a variety of techniques to obtain the right flavoring. Some methods include:

  • Homemade – Chicken noodle soup stock can be prepared by boiling a whole chicken or chicken pieces in water until completely done. Once this is done, the chicken is removed and fat is skimmed off the top before cut up chicken is added back into the water.
  • Pre-packaged – Chicken noodle soup stock can be purchased ready –made. Some cooks use this to boil chicken in to create a hybrid type of stock.
  • Bouillon – This can be boiled to create stock for chicken noodle soup, as well.

Common extra ingredients for chicken noodle soup

Beyond the meat and noodles, cooks may select a variety of other ingredients to go into chicken noodle soup. Some of the most common choices include celery, onions, carrots, potatoes, pepper, salt, sage, parsley, leeks and garlic. Mushrooms, lemon grass and oregano are also sometimes used.
