Choosing a Prepaid Phone that Will Work Outside the US

by DoItYourself Staff

A prepaid phone is a very special type of phone which limits you to the amount of money you can spend. However, most of these are locked to only work in the US, so how can you use them elsewhere?

Using a Cell Phone Abroad

If you talk to your phone network before you go abroad it should be possible to switch to a roaming plan. This means that you will be able to use your phone abroad. However, using a phone in a foreign country is very expensive as you will even have to pay to receive phone calls and texts.

If you take your contract phone abroad then this can end up costing you a lot of money. This is because you will have to pay the roaming costs which can be very expensive.

Limiting Your Costs

A better way of limiting your costs is to buy a prepaid phone and put a fixed amount of credit on it. Once you have used all your credit up then the phone will simply stop working.

Choosing a Prepaid Phone

If you talk to your network then you should be able to use most prepaid phones abroad. However you will not be able to top any of them up unless you phone a US number and give debit card details.
