Choosing a Wide Baby Gate for Your Home

by DoItYourself Staff

At certain places in your home, you may need a wide baby gate. These places often include the top of a stairway or a doorway between rooms, but different homes come with a variety of needs. Choosing the right baby gate is a matter of the utmost concern, for as babies become mobile, they want to go everywhere. Homes, as safe and comfortable as they are, can be perilous to a small child if unprotected. Childproofing doorways and stairwells is an absolute must.

Choosing a Wide Baby Gate

For wide doorways and stairwells, you will need wide baby gates. You will find two primary types of baby gates: pressure-mounted and hardware-mounted.

Pressure-Mounted Gates

Pressure-mounted baby gates adjust to the size of the doorway and lock into place at the sides. For extra-wide openings, gates with longer extensions are required. You will find pressure-mounted gates easier to install. They are also portable, but the danger is that they can be pushed out of place with enough force.

Hardware-Mounted Gates

The alternative is a hardware-mounted gate. Although it requires a permanent attachment to the doorjamb, a strong or eager baby cannot push it out of place.

When choosing a wide baby gate, look into how easy it is to use. Make sure it doesn't offer easy ways for your baby to climb it or dislodge it. For extra-wide spaces, you may have to install a modular baby gate that links together.
