Clean Tile Grout: Can the Color of the Grout Be Changed?

by DoItYourself Staff

Cleaning tile grout can be tiresome with stained areas. The color of grout can be changed in order to permanently cover stains which cannot be cleaned. An acid based cleaner is used to remove the top layer of grout and open up the area for the paint. Water based paint is applied 24 hours later over the desired area. The area is then sealed with a grout sealant. Be sure to use flat paint so that it can be absorbed into the grout. Enamel paint will only sit on top and thus can flake off or render the sealant ineffective.
