Clean Your Charcoal Barbecue Grill in 4 Steps

by DoItYourself Staff

Summer time means cooking out on a charcoal barbecue grill. The flavor from a charcoal barbecue grill is a distinct flavor that many people long for through the winter months. However, if you have not cleaned your grill, it will also have a very distinct flavor.

Clean out Ash

The bottom of the grill is where the burned charcoal bricks, ash and food will have been sitting for the last few months. Remove the top grill and clean all this out with a small shovel.

Rinse out Grill and Clean

Using a garden hose and rinse out the bottom of your grill. Let the water sit to loosen up some of the old charcoal. Add dish detergent and let it soak. Use a thick rag and begin to scrub down the inside of the grill. Replenish the water as needed and continue until clean.

Spray Grill Grates

Set the grill grates on the side and spray them with an oven cleaner. Let them set for 30 minutes to let the cleaner work on the built-up grime, grease and soot.

Scrub Grates Until Clean

Use another rag, along with a warm water and soap solution, and scrub down the grill grates. Rinse them off with a hose. Repeat this process until the grates are clean.
