Cleaning a Gerbil Cage

by DoItYourself Staff

If you want to keep your pet gerbil healthy and happy, it is very important to keep your gerbil cage clean. What follows should give you everything you need to know in order to do a good job.

Set Up Properly

Figure out in advance where you will keep your gerbil while you clean the cage. A running ball or travel cage is a great place to keep your gerbil temporarily.

Empty the Cage

Disassemble the cage if necessary. Once you can access the inside of the cage, remove all of the old bedding, food, and water. Set any containers and toys in the cage aside and clean them as if they were part of  the cage as well.

Clean the Cage

Get out a sponge and soak it in hot water and your dish soap of choice. Use this sponge to clean off all of the surfaces in the cage, as well as the furniture you have removed. Once the cage is clean, you can use a disinfectant to finish up. Bleach mixed with water is a good choice. However, it is very important that you rinse the bleach off thoroughly.

Finishing Up

Once you are done, you can add new bedding for your gerbil, and refill the food and water containers.
