Cleaning a Wooden Patio Table: 3 Tips

by DoItYourself Staff

Cleaning your wooden patio table can be a relatively easy job depending on whether it is done on a regular basis. Good quality wood patio tables should last for years with the correct upkeep, and there are a few tips that will make this job quicker and more effective.

Dry Brush First

First use a soft-bristled cleaning brush to sweep away any dust, debris, or cobwebs. Be sure to turn over the table to sweep off any dirt on the underside. Note any grime that was not removed with dry brushing; this will need to be washed with soap and water.

Spray Down with Garden Hose

Use a standard nozzle on your garden hose to wet down your wood patio table; a power washer usually is not necessary except in cases of extreme dirt, and it can even cause paint chipping if the water pressure is too high.

Use Liquid Detergent or Bleach for Mold

Regular dish detergent is sufficient to clean wood patio tables. Most detergents are too abrasive and can even remove layers of wood stain or paint. If you find any mold on your wood patio table, scrub it away with 1 cup of bleach mixed with 1 gallon of water. Be sure to wear gloves and use a stiffer-bristled scrub brush to remove mold.
