Cleaning Glass Cooktops

by DoItYourself Staff

The easiest way to clean your glass cooktop is to clean up any mess immediately, however as that is not always an option, you need to know how to clean it when other options apply. While some messes can be easily cleaned, others need more work and harsher chemicals.

Step 1-Wipe Surface Down

It is always a good idea to wipe down the surface of your stove with Lysol or another cleaning agent to kill germs and bacteria. This will also help remove stains. Always read the back of the cleaning agent that you intend to use to make sure that it is OK to use on a glass cooktop.

Step 2- Use Warm Water and Soap on Surface

Use a warm or hot wet dish rag to clean the surface of the glass cooktop. This is especially good when the spot is fairly new so it will be easier to wipe up. For spots that have been sitting, use the dish rag on them and rub hard on the spot. After you have wiped down the surface of the cooktop with a hot rag, you may need to use a soap as well. Soak the rag into hot soapy water and ring out, bring it over to the surface and rub on the stain until it has lifted. Repeat if necessary.

Step 3-Cut Out Grease

For a cooktop that has grease stains, try using a grease cleaner such as 409. You can also use vinegar to rub on the grease stain. Pour one of these liquids onto a rag and rub gently on the cooktop to remove the grease stains. When using vinegar, use roughly one cap full.

Step 4-Use Cleaner for Glass Cooktop

If you do not feel any of the other options have worked for you or you want to use something that is made specifically for a glass cooktop, there are several cleaners you can find at large retail stores. Follow the directions on the back of the cleaner specifically.

Step 5- Create Shine

After you have cleaned your stove top, use a glass cleaner to give it some shine. Wipe the surface down with glass cleaner, rag or paper towel.

There are different options to cleaning your glass cooktops. You can simply use items that are from around the house or that you use on other appliances or you can purchase something that is specifically for glass cooktops. Use each of these techniques at your own discretion and if you should have any concerns it is always best to speak with a professional, preferably someone who sold you your cooktop. It is always best to use things that will not damage the glass cooktop so when in doubt find out what is best for your particular cooktop.
