Cleaning Your Vinyl Gutters

Vinyl gutters should be cleaned regularly so that they remain functional and in good condition without breaks or punctures.

Leaves and debris in vinyl gutters can clog them, leading to flooding and water in your basement. Debris can also lead to sagging gutters that may eventually have to be replaced.

Leaf Scoop

One of the simplest ways to clean vinyl gutters is a leaf scoop. These can be purchased at any home improvement store, and act as a tool to scoop out large amount of leaves and debris without requiring you to touch the waste.

Use a ladder to clean the gutters with a leaf scoop. Do not sit on the roof to clean the gutters, as this is a dangerous position and can easily lead to a fall.

Instead, stand several rungs from the top of the ladder and lean over with the leaf scoop to clean out the gutters.

Prevention is Better Than a Cure

Rather than clean the gutters at all, first try to stop leaves from entering your vinyl gutters at all.

Installing a leaf catcher, leaf guard, or gutter guard will prevent leaves and debris from ever entering the gutter. They provide a physical barrier in the form of a mesh screen that goes over the gutter, allowing rain through and stopping leaves.
