If clutter has invaded your home, then it’s time for some serious clutter control. If you don’t do something about this today, you will be drowning under these piles of things sooner or later. Controlling the clutter in your home will not only make the surroundings appear much nicer, but it will also give you a sense of order, which will make your day-to-day life feel less stressful and more put together. Below, you will find practical steps on how to control the clutter in your home today.
Step 1 – De-Clutter Everyday
Devote 5 to 10 minutes of your day to putting things back right where they should be. Don’t wait until the end of the week before you do this because by that time, your house will already be a big mess, and de-cluttering will take you much longer. Use large storage bins for big items and organizing compartments for small items. Shelves are also ideal for organizing books, magazines and other reading materials.
Step 2 – Teach Kids to Put Away Their Things
Buy your kids an attractive toy bin that you think they will like. Getting one that is fun, colorful, and looks like a toy will make them more interested. Then, make a game out of putting away the toys so that your kids feel encouraged to clean up. It’s important to instill this habit in your kids as early as possible so that when they grow up, keeping things organized will come naturally for them.
Step 3 – Dump Junk Mail Right Away
Don’t wait for the junk mail to pile up before you deal with it. Put it in the recycling bin so you don’t waste paper.
Step 4 – File Important Documents
It’s not wise to leave important documents lying around unless you want your kid to make paper plane out of them. Organize documents in a filing cabinet so you know where to find them when you need them.
Step 5 – Do Serious De-Cluttering Twice a Month
Use the five boxes method for sorting out items that have accumulated over a month. The first box should be for donation and things you want to give away. Another box should be for stuff you want to sell either at a thrift shop or in a garage sale. Items that are rarely used should go to the store box. Those that you use all the time should go to the organizing box. Finally, things that you no longer need, you cannot sell, and you cannot donate should go to the garbage box. It is a good idea to bring this box to the recycling center so you don’t waste anything.
Step 6 – Clean Your Home
After you’re done sorting much of the mess in your home, you also need to clean it. Vacuum the entire floor area of your home, including the hidden spots. Wipe furniture with a clean damp cloth to remove dust.
