Many of the problems regarding a window/door lock involve the lock itself. The type of locks used on doors are very different than the type found on windows. The lock on a window is designed to be engaged only from the inside of the home unlike door locks that are key controlled from both sides. The problems associated with each of these lock, therefore, will be different.
Window Locks
Window locks can become difficult to engage over time. Check to be sure that the window is still installed properly in its track. When the window is not flush in position, the lock will be difficult to move to the locked position. Check your window locks frequently to be sure that they are working properly.
Door Locks
Door locks problems can be more difficult to deal with because the locking mechanism is a bit more complicated. The mechanism in the lock could break if your key turns but does not engage the lock.
If this happens, you can have the mechanism repaired by a professional locksmith, or you can take it on yourself as a home improvement project. A quick trip to the hardware store to buy a new lock set will save you time and money.
