Compare Home Security: Motion Sensor vs Camera

by DoItYourself Staff

When setting up a home security system it is important to compare home security options.  Two common home security devices are motions sensors and cameras.

The Pros and Cons of a Motion Sensor

Motions sensors are a great security device for protecting yourself and your belongings when you are home. Motion sensors offer a number of different options. Some simply turn on spot lights while others may set off an internal alarm. These can alert you to the presence of someone who doesn’t belong or scare away a would-be intruder. The biggest drawback to a motion sensor is it offers little help when you are not around to see the lights.

The Pros and Cons of a Camera

Cameras are not designed to offer physical protection of the home. They are generally designed to catch someone who has already broken into a home more than actually stopping the break-in. Still, the presence of cameras around your house will deter trespassers from entering your property. Furthermore, cameras will effectively prevent many burglaries because they increase the odds of successfully catching the burglar.
