Compost Build

by DoItYourself Staff

Generating a compost build has been done for many years, but it seems to be making a comeback with interest in organically grown fruits and vegetables. Creating a compost bin or build is and easy procedure.

Tips for compost build
Simply put, a compost pile is the remains of the decayed plants and vegetables leftover from last years garden. However, you can add to your compost all year long, with dead leaves from house plants and remains of fruits and vegetables that are no longer fresh enough to eat. Egg shells and even paper towels can be added to a compost build.

You may feel comfortable building a compost bin to encase the remains of decayed plants, fruits, or vegetables. This can be done simply by taking a large plastic bin, like those found in the storage department of discount stores, and drill several holes in the bottom and sides for proper ventilation. This can sit above the ground but works best in a shaded area.

However, if you want to keep the bin contained, it can be embedded into the ground. If doing this, be sure to leave enough room so that the bin protrudes out of the ground enough for easy lid removal and replacement. You want to prevent any animals from getting into the compost build.

Mown grass, weeds, and dead leaves are great for a compost build if they have not been exposed to pesticides. Add limestone to allay any bad odors and keep it moist and turn every week for optimum outcome.

Advantages of compost build
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding organic food. The question seems to be, what exactly constitutes organic. By building a personal compost pile and fertilizing your garden, you will alleviate any questions about whether or not the food on your table is organic. This will be an excellent additive to next year’s garden.
