Constructing The Perfect Breakfast Bar
A breakfast bar can be one of the most convenient and valuable additions to your kitchen. Consider a few factors before you move on with these step-by-step installation instructions.
Existing Kitchen
You may use your breakfast bar as a gathering spot for family and guests when preparing meals, eating and entertaining. Remember that your kitchen can be the center of your home, where your family gathers at the beginning and end of each day. A breakfast bar can also be an ideal space for serving buffet-style meals and hors d'oeuvres.
Consider the size and design of your existing kitchen. The most efficient kitchen design for breakfast bars is U-shaped or galley-style with space to add an end extension for the bar. Large kitchens with an existing island can also work well when adding a breakfast bar space.
Seating Arrangements
In most cases, seating for a breakfast bar can be several stools that fit under the bar when not in use. Alternatively, you may choose permanent seating. In this case, install swivel seats similar to those found in many commercial bars. As a third option, consider a high bench where family members can easily slide in and out of the bar area.
Steps for Construction
Step 1 - First, decide how you will be using the breakfast bar space and what features you want it to include. For example, you may want a bar that extends beyond an existing leg of the kitchen that contains the sink with cabinets underneath or a bank of ceiling mounted cabinets.
Step 2 - Measure the opening for the length of your new breakfast bar. Order a countertop of the correct length and size that you want for your purposes. You should select a countertop that complements the other surfaces already in your kitchen. If this is not possible, consider installing new countertops for the entire kitchen.
Step 3 - Measure and cut medium-density fiberboard to approximately 18 inches deep and 2 inches shorter than the finished countertop length.
Step 4 - Mount the fiberboard to a half-wall where you will install the breakfast bar. Make sure that the fiberboard is even and straight.
Step 5 - Check the fit of the countertop against the fiberboard and set it aside. Apply Liquid Nails or a similar adhesive to the top of the fiberboard.
Step 6 - Fit the countertop over the fiberboard and attach with 1-inch wood screws from the underside.
Step 7 - Place vertical supports under the new countertop and secure it. Finally, secure vertical supports to the wall for additional support.
