Controlling the Behavior of Your New Boat

by DoItYourself Staff

A new fishing boat can bring many years of enjoyment for the entire family. While driving a boat around a lake may not seem to require a great deal of skill, you can cause destruction to the lake itself if the boat is not driven correctly.

Learn How the Motor Operates

Fisherman sometimes damage lakes and their inhabitants because they have not taken the time to learn how their motor operates. Your boat will have either an inboard or an outboard motor, each of which operates differently. There are also different sizes of engines which contribute to speed and handling. Take time to get to know how your type of motor is controlled. Once you are skilled at handling your motor you will have much more control over the boat.

Operate Boat with Due Diligence

Driving a boat is a privilege that many people enjoy. However, driving the boat must be done with all due diligence towards the vegetation and life within the lake. Control the speed, and the line of the boat when driving through weeded sections. This is not only for the health of the plants, but also your motor. Keep the speeds low, and the trim of the motor high. With the motor higher in the water you cause less damage to roots of the plants.
