You might discover several areas throughout the home where wasted space can be converted into a book shelf. This space can be of any size. When carefully examining wall space, you might find those bare areas screaming out for decoration and use.

Follow these instructions to convert an unused area into useful space by installing a recessed book shelf.

Step 1–Prep the Area

Make sure the area where you install the shelf is free from any fixtures or wall hangings. Also, clear enough area to work safely.

Step 2–Find Studs

Locate any studs that surround the area on the wall to be opened and mark these.

Step 3–Measure the Space

Mark the height and width for the opening to be framed.

Step 4–Cut Wood Frame Sections

Cut six 2x4s to the height measurements using a circular saw. Cut two 2x4s to the width measurements.

Step 5–Attach Frame

Attach one width measured 2x4 to the top of the measured wall space nailing it into a marked stud with a nail gun, using 8-penny nails. Repeat this step at the bottom attaching the other width measured 2x4.

Attach two pieces of height measured 2x4s to the left and two pieces of height measured 2x4s to the right areas of the measured wall space. Attach two of the height measured 2x4s to the centermost point of the measured wall space.

Step 6–Cut out the Wall

Measure the opening behind the shelf frame and cut away the drywall with a utility knife. Now screw the drywall into studs on either side of the book shelf opening to make sure the wall is firmly secured.

Step 7–Choose Number of Shelves, Measure and Cut

Taking into consideration the entire space available, select the number of shelves you wish to install. Measure the inside length between the left vertical frame board and the center frame board. Repeat this for the right side. Although you have already pinpointed the center, separate measurements are needed to ensure accuracy of shelf board length. Cut 1 by 6 boards to use as your shelving and side support.

Step 8–Attach Shelves and Side Supports

Starting from the frame bottom, attach a length of 1x6. Allowing for the desired height between shelves, cut a 1x6 to attach as a side support. Repeat this step for each shelf installed.

Step 9–Finish

Cut molding to attach covering for the sides of the installed shelving unit with a miter saw. Stain or paint to desired look.

Make sure to wear protective glasses when cutting all wood pieces. It is a good idea to keep protective eyewear on during the entire construction process to ensure safety.
