Converting a Closet to an Office: Cost Considerations

by DoItYourself Staff

For many, converting a closet into a small office is an ideal solution to finding space for a desk, and computer. When you think about it, for simple day to day tasks like paying bills, writing letters, or just surfing the Internet, a closet office is a great way to save space, while giving purpose to a seldom used area.

While this is a great idea, and goes a long ways toward space saving, and organization there are some costs to consider when doing any type of makeover or remodeling project. Turning a closet into an office will require some financial considerations, such as:

  • Cost of materials for desk, shelves, and filing
  • Paint
  • Computer and printer
  • Any structural changes to door frame, or interior

Calculating Costs
In any remodel, no matter what the size it is best to calculate the cost before you go shopping for materials. Fortunately, a closet is not a large space so you will not need to worry about spending thousands on it.

You can quickly calculate the cost by measuring the room closet size for square footage. A gallon of paint should cover a regular sized closet with two coats. Use your measurements for the built in units such as desk and shelving. Find out how much lumber costs per sheet or boardfeet and calculate with your measurements.
