Cornice, or crown molding, is a common feature in large rooms of new homes. It is an intricately shaped piece of trim that is placed in the corner between the wall and the ceiling. Cornice molding only looks right if you carefully measure out every angle.
- To measure the length for the cornice, measure from the corner of one wall to another. You have to be as accurate as you can, so make sure you double check.
- Most corners do not come to a perfect 90 degree angle. Measure each corner with an adjustable protractor and divide the number in half. This is the angle at which you need to cut the cornice molding.
- Cut the molding and nail it to the ceiling with finishing nails.
- Repeat these steps until the ceiling is complete.
Cornice Molding Tips
Cornice molding tends to be bold and elegant. It looks best in large, airy rooms with mid to high ceilings. Almost all cornice molding is unique and you can pick out any design you want. Sometimes thick cornice molding can make a room look contained if the room is too small. Almost all molding is painted glossy white, but some people paint it gold or tan.
