Cost Factor of Vintage Upholstery Fabrics

by DoItYourself Staff

Vintage upholstery fabric can be very hard to come by owing to the age of a piece of material that may need replacing. Vintage fabric is by its very nature an old fabric and therefore will be discontinued as a production piece. There are companies around the globe who still product fabrics in a vintage style and there are retro fabrics. These fabrics look similar but are made with more modern methods.

Availability and Supply

Supplies are usually quite limited. Even if you find the perfect fabric to reupholster a set of antique chairs, you may find that you will still not have enough to cover them all. You may not be able to get hold of swatches from companies, either, owing to the small amount of fabric they are able to supply. You can locate some vintage fabrics by conducting an online search or by trying eBay.

Influences on Cost

Cost factors will vary between sellers, importers or rarity of the fabric you intend on purchasing. Average costs are approximately $9 per yard but, do be aware that you could be double, or even triple that amount if a particular fabric is difficult to acquire or particularly expensive because of the material. Scraps and small cuts off are also usually sold and you might get a cheaper bargain by opting for a smaller piece of vintage upholstery fabric.
