Crate Training a Restless Dog? Toys Can Help.

by DoItYourself Staff

Crate training is harder on some dogs than others. When a dog is restless, high energy, or just uncomfortable, they may find the training process very taxing. A familiar object like a toy can make the whole process more appealing and less stressful.

Chew Toys

For dogs that are anxious by nature, or crave human interaction, the crate training process can be long and tedious. By introducing chew toys you will give your pet something to focus on other than the crate. This will calm him down, cut down on boredom and distract him from the fact he is in a crate. Over time, the crate your dog will begin to perceive the crate as a second home and the anxiety levels will decrease.

Raw Hides

Raw hide toys are great for restless dogs. They are tasty, take time to chew, and dogs love them. By having a rawhide ready for your dog in the crate, you create an enjoyable experience. Your pet will start to look forward to the time in the crate. The rawhide will keep the dog busy, and will lessen the restlessness they experience.

Rope Toys

For dogs that love to stay active, a rope toy may be the best option. If you play with your pet outdoors with a rope, then toss the rope into the crate when it's time to crate your dog. Make sure the rope you choose is safe for the dog to chew on. Make sure your dog isn't able to pull it apart or ingest any of it. For a heavy chewer, you should consider one of the other toy options.

Stuffed Toys

Your dog may have a favorite stuffed toy. Placing this in the crate during crate training will help to calm the pet down. Again, make sure the toy can't be pulled apart when left alone. A heavy chewer will become more anxious during crating, and can tear apart a stuffed animal in just a matter of minutes.

Kongs and Treat Toys

For an especially restless dog, a Kong toy or other toy that can be stuffed with a treat is a great way to calm them down. These toys are designed for especially heavy chewers. You can stuff a favorite treat or some peanut butter in to the center of the toy. Your pet won't mind spending a lot of time trying to get at the treat! Kongs come in a variety of sizes to accommodate all kind of dogs.

The key to having a calm animal during crate training is to keep them occupied. Toys are a great way to accomplish this. Any dog can be crate trained. Some just need familiar distractions.
