Create a Simple CD Storage Cabinet Using Chipboard
what you'll need
- 5 Pieces of thin chipboard
- Scrap wood for back of the cabinet
- Wood glue
- Wood stain (optional)
- Wood clamps
- Plastic CD brackets
- Panel pins
If all of your CD cases are lying around and looking untidy, it may be time to make a CD storage cabinet to alleviate the problem. This piece of storage equipment is easy to construct and will create valuable space in your home or office.
Step 1 - Measurements
Determine how big you want your CD storage cabinet to be. The thickness of the bottom piece will determine how deep it is and your middle divider will have to be the same thickness so it will fit from the back to the front of the cabinet. The length of the base should be slightly longer than 2 CDs. This way, the cabinet can hold 2 columns of CDs with room for the middle divider. Remember that the thickness of all the boards must be the same to make an even cabinet.
Step 2 - Connecting Sides to Bottom
Take the piece that will act as the bottom of the CD storage cabinet and place it on your work table. Apply wood glue to the outer edges of the chipboard and in a line down the middle where the divider will sit. Place each piece of wood (the sides and middle divider) onto the base board at the point where they attach; hold each wood piece in place with a clamp until secure.
Step 3 - Connecting the Backboard
Once the sides and dividing board are dry and secure, turn the half-finished cabinet face down so that you can attach the backboard. Apply wood glue to the back edge of the divider and to both side pieces. You will also need to apply glue to the back edge of the bottom plank. Wait until the wood glue has dried before moving on to the next step.
Step 4 - Connecting the Top Plank
Apply wood glue to the top edges of the backboard, dividing board and 2 side pieces. Place the top board on the cabinet and apply a gentle amount of pressure. Wait for the wood glue to dry before continuing the project.
Step 5 - Staining (optional)
You may want to stain your CD storage cabinet to match the rest of your furniture, especially if you are using scrap wood that is not of the same color. Apply the stain in long strokes along the length of the board. Be prepared to stain the storage cabinet in one sitting because if you stop and start, the lines you create from the stain may be visible.
Step 6 - CD Brackets
Plastic CD brackets are widely available at most home improvement stores and you can easily apply them to your CD storage cabinet to keep your CDs in place. You can continue using wood glue or use another kind of adhesive, such as superglue, to fix them to the inside of your CD cabinet. Apply the brackets directly below one another in a straight line on the insides of both side pieces as well as the dividing plank.
Tip
On thicker piece of chipboard, panel pins can be used to help keep the wood glue adhere properly.
