Creating a Gym with Home Fitness Equipment

by DoItYourself Staff

The kind of  home fitness equipment one selects depends on the individual’s area of focus. It is also heavily dependent on one’s budgetary constraints and inaccessibility of an external gym due to time constraints. Having a gym within one’s residence considerably adds to one’s regularity in working out and can be useful for individuals with motivation issues.  some people give up their gym memberships because they're intimidated by in-shape gym goers. A home gym is ideal in this case.

Tip 1: Choosing the Equipment According to Need

Customize your personal gym by understanding your body’s problem areas. If you want to lose belly fat, invest in abs equipment. An exercise eall is useful for building back and abdominal muscles. Dumbbells are commonly obtained for building abs, reducing arm and thigh fat. Treadmills are a must for any gym and are an important asset for focusing on cardiovascular workout. When choosing a treadmill, look for high horsepower so that it lasts you longer and an emergency stop button in case you are falling off. Resistance Bands are ideal for working on biceps and triceps.

Tip 2: Choosing the Equipment According to Portability/Space/Money

Try and chose portable and compact equipment so that it is easy to move around and does not occupy too much space.  Although foldable treadmills save space, they can be relatively unstable and are not advisable. An aerobic step is a compact and cheap option for burning calories and the height can be increased for a more strenuous workout. Resistance bands are another suitable option for a home gym since they only occupy closet space, are cheap and add to one’s general physique. Also the bands vary in stiffness and therefore cater to beginners as well as advanced users. Elliptical trainers and bikes would not be an ideal choice if you are facing space constraints. Also, they are not cheap hence you might as well buy a good quality treadmill, since the function is approximately the same and treadmills are more versatile. An exercise mat is essential for routines that require you to lie down on the floor. They are cheap and compact. Lastly, buy a Jump rope to add to your cardiovascular workout in an extremely cost-effective manner.

Tip 3: Bringing it All Together

Choose the space where you ideally see yourself working out. Though most people go for basements or garages, you can go with more populated rooms if you simply limit yourself to the equipments mentioned above. Since this equipment is primarily compact, you can work out in front of the TV or in front of a pleasant outdoor view without having to worry about space.

If you do have an isolated area, use colors to lighten the atmosphere and increase your enjoyment. Install a music system or a DVD player to keep your mind occupied during the workouts. Music also helps to create a rhythmic movement and therefore improves motor skills. Regulate the temperature settings to a comfortable degree – a range recommended by experts is 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit. If you tend to sweat a lot, purchase a table fan so that you may occasionally stand in front of it.
