Creating A Mosaic Backsplash For Your Kitchen
Anyone can employ the art of mosaic design to create a beautiful mosaic backsplash for the kitchen that is visually pleasing and complementary to the space. You should already have decided upon a design that you will create for the space. If you have yet to decide, remember that the possibilities are endless and you may even create an abstract design.
The following list will provide you with a few ideas that may inspire you and be appropriate for your kitchen.
- A bowl of fruit
- Assorted vegetables
- Kitchen utensils
- A picnic basket
- An abstract outdoor scene
- An abstract garden scene
Supplies
With a general idea of what you wish to create, you will need to gather supplies. The supplies needed include: one permanent black marker, one mosaic tile cutter, mosaic tiles in assorted colors, quick drying glue and bathroom tile grout.
Mark the design
On the surface of your backsplash, draw out the design you will turn into a mosaic with the black permanent marker. Try not to choose a design that is too intricate because it is time consuming and difficult to glue tiny pieces of mosaic tile.
Sort Tiles
With a completed sketch of your design, you may begin picking out mosaic tiles and placing them in piles corresponding to their colors. It is easier to have the colors separated into piles because it eliminates the wasted time that accompanies searching for a specific tile. Make sure to lay the colored tiles next to each other to make sure that the colors look good together.
Cut and Glue Tiles
Next, cut the mosaic tiles to a size that is appropriate for your design. You want to cut the tiles a little bit smaller than the design itself so you don’t go out of the lines. Individually glue the appropriately cut mosaic tiles to the backsplash surface.
Try not to use too much glue if you’re working on a vertical surface; an overabundance of glue will likely cause the tiles to slide out of place. Firmly press down on each tile to ensure that it is tightly bonded to the backsplash surface. When all of the tiles are glued to the backsplash, allow the glue to cure for at least 24 hours. During the first hour of curing it is helpful to check on the project for loose or sliding tiles.
Grout Tiles
After 24 hours have passed, you may prepare to grout your design and literally set it in stone. However, before taking the final leap you should visually check the design to make sure that it is exactly how you want it to look. If there is a misplaced tile, peel it off and glue another in its place. Remember that the glue has to cure for another 24 hours before grouting is appropriate. You want to make sure that the backsplash is perfect before it becomes permanent.
You may grout your design with ordinary bathroom grout; it will provide its own instructions for use. Consult a professional at any home improvement store if you are confused about how to use the bathroom grout.
