Step One- Choose Your Color Scheme
Choosing your color scheme is of the most important steps of any room conversion. After all, the color palate you choose will affect the furniture and decorations you choose. You will want to color coordinate all your items to match one specific theme. One of the easiest ways to choose a color scheme is to select a dominate item in the room. For example you may have a chair, bedspread, or rug that you want to use in the room. If this id the case your job is easy. Simply pick coordinating colors that will match your item. However, if you do not have a specific item your canvas is limitless. Dream big and look through design books to get a feel for the way you want the room to look.
Step Two - Paint Your New Space
Painting the converted space will be the first hands on step. Make sure you use plenty of tape and cover the floors with plastic. Once you have the room prepared you can begin the painting process. Use rollers for the main part of the wall and an edging brush to paint corners, or areas where the wall meets the ceiling or floor. You can also give your new room a dramatic look by alternating wall colors or paint patterns. This trick can make your room look bigger or more cosy depending on what you want. In most cases you will use the darkest color on the wall that will attract the most attention. Therefore, consider where you want to draw guests in the room before painting.
Step Three - Cover the Floor
If you are lucky enough to have a beautiful wooden floor you may want to show it off. However, even in this situation you will want some areas of the floor covered. You may decide to use small area rugs to accent the layout of the room. In addition, throw rugs are great on cold mornings when you don't want your bare feet on the floor as soon as you get out of bed. Although, if you want to cover most of the wood floor there are plenty of things to choose from. You could have carpet laid on the floor or you could use large room size rugs to cover the existing floor. Some people today even choose large pieces of carpet and have the edges wrapped to create a one of a kind room rug. When using a large rug consider that it will determine a lot about the space in the room. Elegant rooms may call for a Persian rug while a kids playroom probably needs a rug that is more durable and forgiving.
Step Four - Fill Your Space
If your new room is a bedroom you will want to create some type of storage for clothes and personal items. You can buy a move-able closet at most department stores today. However, if your room will be a fun room for crafts, kids or music you are ready to add your finishing touches, Hang the pictures, drapes, and paintings that fill your room.
