Crepe Pan

by DoItYourself Staff

A crepe pan is a must have for any at-home chef. Crepes generically refer to any type of thin, light doughy bread cooked on some form of griddle.

All About a Crepe Pan

Crepes are thought of often in the version known as Crepe Suzette, a French dish, but you can use a crepe pan to make all sorts of things. Here is a short list of things from many cultures that are actually crepes and can be cooked in a crepe pan:

  • Tortillas
  • Crespelle
  • Galettes
  • Pancakes

The most traditional crepe pan is a shallow steel frying pan or flat griddle. This style crepe pan is intended to heat and bake crepes quickly. Another type of crepe pan is often referred to as upside down crepe pan. It has a flat surface that goes toward the heat and a rounded surface that you dip in crepe batter to keep the crepes as flat as possible.

Another type of crepe pan is an electric version. These are sometimes upside down varieties or more traditional, but they have their own electric heat source that heats more evenly and consistently. Often an electric crepe pan also gives the chef a sign when it is at the perfect temperature to cook on and when the crepes are done.
