A Cut-in-brace is a piece of 2x4 that has been inserted diagonally next to a stud in a wall to help support it. Most of them are made from 2x4s, but they can be made from almost any material that will be flush with the wall. They are not always necessary, but they do give the building a bit of extra stability. To make a cut-in-brace you will need:
• 2x4s
• A saw, either powered or hand held
• Pencil
• Protractor
• Measuring Tape
• Nail Gun
• Working Gloves
Cut out 2x4s about a foot long with 45 degree angles on each end, the angles should point towards each other. Fit the cut-in-brace into the bottom corner of the stud and nail it in place. Repeat this process with all of the other studs on both sides. You may need to make the cut-in-brace shorter so it doesn't bump into the one next to it.
When to Use a Cut-in-Brace
Most carpenters agree that a cut-in-brace should be used in any walls over eight feet. You may want to check to see if your area has any other codes for a cut-in-brace. They are usually not used in small rooms or a place in which the studs are too close together to fit a cut-in-brace.
