Demistifying Doorbell Transformer Placement

by DoItYourself Staff

A doorbell transformer reduces normal 120-volt power to 10 or 16 volts, thus adapting regular current to low-voltage equipment such as chimes, buzzers and bells. Most trouble shooting of a doorbell system should begin with the transformer, but your doorbell transformer may not be easy to find, depending on the style of doorbell.

Inside the Doorbell Unit

On newer doorbell, buzzer and chime units, the doorbell transformer is built right into the unit. This eliminates the need for a separate transformer and the hassle of locating it if there is a problem with the doorbell.

In a Separate Outlet Box

With the older styles of doorbells, the doorbell transformer will most likely be situated outside of the unit. Typically the doorbell transformer can be found in a separate outlet box close to the doorbell. If you are unsure of where your transformer is located, you can find it by following the wires from the main doorbell unit, since the transformer will be attached.
