A bathroom towel cabinet is a great storage option for any family with limited space in their bathroom, no matter the size. Though you could buy a pre-fabricated cupboard, designing your own bathroom towel cabinet lets you determine the function and build of your storage. The description below is merely a suggestion; feel free to improvise on building materials or sizes.
Step 1: Paint or Stain Wood
Although painting or staining the wood is optional, doing so will give your towel cabinet style. Sand the cut pieces of wood and apply the stain or paint, allowing them to dry before continuing.
Step 2: Build the Frame
Take the 2 pieces of 1’6”x2’ plywood and the two 4-foot side pieces and lay them down to form a 2x4 frame. Use three 1-inch screws to secure the frame, from the top and bottom to the sides. For more stability, consider adding a thin line of wood glue between the pieces of wood in the frame. Applied sparingly enough, the wood glue will improve effectiveness and utility without sacrificing style.
Step 3: Add the Back
Use 1-inch screws to affix the back onto the frame. Use the 2x4 piece as the back piece, screwing in every 6 inches. This is called a carcase, the basic unit of a cabinet. You can then add doors or trim to make the cabinet more attractive.
Step 4: Install Shelves
Use as many shelves as you’d like. For every shelf, drive two 1” screws through the side of the cabinet, into the wooden shelf. This will secure the shelf.
Step 5: Add the Door
To add a door to your cabinet, use the 3/8” screws to install hinges onto one side of the door. Install the hinges 6 inches from the top and bottom. Attach the other ends of the hinges to the cabinet. Put the handle on the door
Step 6: Hang the Cabinet
Use the stud finder to locate a wall stud. Use a 2-inch screw to attach the back of the cabinet 8 inches below the top of the bathroom towel cabinet to the wall. Use a second 2-inch screw 8 inches above the bottom of the cabinet. Use a level to determine if the cabinet is hanging at a perpendicular angle to the wall stud.
