Digital TV Antenna vs Amplified Digital TV Antenna

by DoItYourself Staff

If you don't watch much television and aren't interested in paying for cable, you should look into purchasing a digital TV antenna. When shopping around for a suitable antenna, however, it's important to know the difference between a regular digital TV antenna and an amplified one.

Digital TV Antennas

While a standard digital TV antenna may work fine in certain homes, they are often ineffective in rural areas and, if placed indoors, are subject to electrical interference from other devices in your home. Outdoor digital TV antennas tend to be better at picking up signals from local stations than their indoor counterparts, but if you live in a secluded area, don't expect a dramatic improvement. Regular digital TV antennas are generally recommended for homes in well-populated areas with an abundance of strong station signals.

Amplified Digital TV Antennas

Amplified digital TV antennas are typically better at picking up signals from greater distances than regular antennas. Additionally, they aren't as weak against electrical interference from other home appliances when placed indoors. What's more, amplified antennas do a fairly effective job of cutting back on the static and fuzz synonymous with antenna-controlled television. Also, as the name suggests, amplified antennas are able to amplify weak station signals and make them come in clearer.
