Dimension stock is another name for hardwood dimension lumber. Dimension lumber is also available in softwoods, and in softwoods, dimension lumber is more accurately sized. Hardwood dimension stock is different, since it can be surfaced on only one side, or two sides.
Sizes of Dimension Stock
Hardwoods rarely come in specific sizes. They are usually in odd lengths and widths and are sold according to the availability of the wood. Dimension stock is an old lumberman’s term where specific pieces of hardwood are cut down to specific sizes, planed and cut to fit a standard or workable size.
Dimension stock is usually rough cut, according to needs. In any hardwood lumberyard, the pieces of lumber are stacked or stored vertically in random lengths and sizes. Basically, dimension stock is any and all hardwood stock which must be custom cut and planed, after purchasing as a piece of non-standardized hardwood. This is usually done by the lumberyard for a small fee.
