Dishwasher Door Gasket Replacement Tips

by DoItYourself Staff

The dishwasher door gasket is necessary to form a tight seal when the dishwasher is running. Without the gasket, water can drain down the front of the dishwasher, causing a mess and potentially damaging your floors and other appliances. Gaskets tend to become worn with time and can crack or peel back from the frame. If you need to replace the gasket on your dishwasher door, there are a few things you want to keep in mind.

Gasket Size

Every dishwasher model is slightly different in size. You want to make sure you have the exact specifications for yours before you purchase the gasket. Most often you can purchase gaskets specifically for the model dishwasher you have. Purchasing the wrong size gasket will lead to a leaky door.

Dry versus Wet Gaskets

For most models it is advised to soak the new gasket in a sink full of hot water to help make the gasket more pliable. Installing a dry gasket will not only be difficult, but it can lead to the gasket not being placed correctly.

Removing Screws

As you need to remove screws from the old gasket to replace the new one, it's best to only remove 1 or 2 at a time. Removing all of them at once will cause the door to fall apart. This is not something that is easy to fix without extra help.
