Dishwasher Replacement: 6 Tips
There will come a time when you need dishwasher replacement. Shopping for a new dishwasher might not be the most glamorous task, but it has to be done. There are a number of things that are worth remembering when looking for a new dishwasher.
1 - Size
Before you go shopping for a dishwasher replacement, measure the width of your old dishwasher. There are different standard sizes and you need to be sure you buy the right one. You’ll find that dishwashers are usually 24 inches wide, with some 18 inches wide. Taking the time to measure first can save a great deal of grief later.
2 - Needs
What do you want in a dishwasher? Is it just something to wash the family dishes after a meal? Are you likely to be cleaning many pots and pans in your dishwasher, all with food stuck to them? If the last is the case you want a model that will be heavy duty, otherwise you’ll wear out your new dishwasher very quickly. If you don’t want to rinse the dishes and pots before you wash you should seek out a dishwasher replacement that has a food grinder.
3 - Energy Consumption
You should always look for the Energy Star sticker on a dishwasher replacement. This is an indication that it’s energy efficient. You want something that won’t add to your electric bill if you use it every night. New dishwashers tend to be energy efficient, but you should take the time to study the ratings of different brands before you reach a decision.
4 - Noise
Dishwashers are rated by noise. You want one that is energy efficient but extremely quiet. A dishwasher replacement on a slow cycle had be virtually silent. Even on a normal cycle a good dishwasher replacement shouldn’t drown out everything else in the kitchen.
5 - Warranty
Study the warranty before you decide which dishwasher to buy. Find out exactly what’s covered and for how long. You want to buy from a company that will stand behind its product. A good warranty will last at least a year, and you can often choose to extend it for longer via the store. Be aware that you will have to pay for extended warranties.
6 - Installation
When you’re installing the dishwasher, make sure it’s level on the floor. The first thing you need to attach is the drain hose. You’ll only need to use a hose clamp to attach it. Before you attach the wiring, ensure the circuit for the dishwasher replacement is switched off at the breaker box. When you’ve done this, be certain to connect the wires properly, with green to green, white to white and black to black in the junction book. Tighten the connections fully.
Once you’ve slid the dishwasher into place, check once more that it’s level. Use shims if you have to. The dishwasher will work more efficiently if it’s level. Only then should you put the mounting screws in place that fix the dishwasher to the kitchen counter and keep it steady.
