Disinfecting Brewing Equipment
If you like to brew homemade beer, you must remember to disinfect your brewing equipment, as a health and safety procedure. Make a practice of keeping all your brewing equipment items as well as your beer bottles sterilized and you'll have excellent hygiene results.
1 – Collecting All Parts of the Brewing Equipment
Collect all the parts of your brewing equipment which you normally use after boiling the wort. These brewing equipment parts should include the thermometer, the yeast starter jar, the airlock, the fermentor, the lid and the funnels as well as the siphons.
2 – Washing the Brewing Equipment
Prepare a solution made from water and brewing equipment sanitizer. Make sure that the solution consists of 5 ounces of water per ounce of sanitizer. Submerge all the brewing equipment parts into the solution and leave them to soak for some minutes. Now it is time to rinse the brewing equipment with hot water. If you are using a no-rinse formula, let the brewing equipment dry thoroughly.
3 – Sterilizing the Equipment with Dry Heat
Collect the parts of your brewing equipment and heat an oven beforehand. Remember to refer to a home-brewing table to know determine the right temperature. This depends on how long you wish to keep the equipment in the oven. Generally speaking, the temperature varies from about 338 degrees for an hour and 250 degrees for 12 hours.
Do not forget to cover any glass parts with aluminum foil and keep them covered till you are ready to use them again. The foil keeps the glass sterilized. Put the brewing equipment into the oven and leave it for the longest time possible in order to have a good sterilization.
4 – Cleaning the Equipment with Moist Heat
Put the parts of your brewing equipment in a pressure cooker or an autoclave. Read the directions of the equipment to know how much water you need. Steam-clean the brewing equipment for about 20 minutes and at a temperature of about 257 degrees. Now put the brewing equipment in a dishwasher and leave it there for a cycle, but remember not to utilize a detergent. You can clean the outer surface of beer bottles like this as well.
5 – Sanitizing the Beer Bottles
Sanitize the beer bottles by soaking them in the sink, in a solution which consists of one gallon warm water and 1/4 cup bleach. Lift the bottles from the sink and peel away the label. Remove any adhesive left on the bottles with a sponge. Put the bottles upside down in your dishwasher.
Do not allow them to be in contact with one another so that the glass will not crack. Shut the dishwasher and adjust it to the longest heat dry cycle. Let the bottles dry thoroughly before you reuse them. However, remember to use the bottles immediately after they dry up so that dust and dirt will not have time to settle on them. You must always remember not to utilize any detergent when cleaning and washing brewing equipment and beer bottles because the scent of the detergent may affect the taste of your homemade beer.
