DIY Chandelier Chain Cover
If you have an older chandelier or pendant light, consider adding a decorative chandelier chain cover to help hide the unsightly chain. Making a chandelier cover is very easy and certainly a lot cheaper than buying one. You don't even need to know how to sew! Here is a step-by-step guide to help you make your own decorative chandelier chain cover.
What You'll Need:
- A strip of fabric that is about 4 1/2 to 5 inches wide, and is long enough to cover the entire length of your chandelier chain. Choose a color that complements your walls and ceiling or blends well with tables or other furniture in the room. You should also choose a heavy duty material and not one that is thin or flimsy.
- An iron
- A roll of Velcro strip
- Scissors
- Spray on starch
Step 1 - Prepare Your Iron
Set the iron to its highest setting and allow it to heat up.
Step 2 - Chandelier Cover Material
- Lay out the strip of fabric on your ironing board so that the front of the fabric is face down on your ironing board.
- Fold the cut side of the material inward, and try to make sure that the fold is straight and even along the entire length of the material.
- Apply a good heavy spraying of starch along the fold and use your iron to iron back and forth along the scene creating a hard crease.
- Repeat the process for the other edge of the material and make sure that the creases on both sides are crisp and sharp. You may have to apply at two or three coats of starch to make sure the fabric will hold its crease over time.
- After you have done the long sides of the fabric, repeat the process for both shorter sites of your material.
Step 3 – Cut and Place the Velcro
- Take your role of Velcro and roll out enough to cover the entire length of the material that will be used for your chandelier cover.
- If you do not have enough Velcro on the roll, you can take your scissors and simply cut the Velcro long ways and make two equivalent lengths of Velcro that are shorter in width.
- After you cut the Velcro, remove the protective backing from the Velcro and press onto the fabric.
- You will need to separate the Velcro and make sure that the Velcro is securely affixed on both sides.
Step 4 - Final Ironing
- Adjust your iron to its lowest setting, and allow to cool for a few minutes.
- After the iron has cooled, run it over the material where the Velcro is affixed. This will help to melt the glue that attaches the Velcro to the material just slightly, and remove any air bubbles that may be preventing the Velcro from being firmly affixed to the material.
- Iron very lightly and allow the material to cool for about five minutes.
Step 5 - Install the Chandelier Chain Cover
Wrap the chandelier chain cover around the chandelier chain and secure the Velcro.
