DIY Chic Chandelier

by DoItYourself Staff

By creating a chic chandelier as a do-it-yourself project you will have a one-of-a-kind piece that reflects your personality while accenting your decor. You can either use an existing chandelier or make one from scratch. Either way the creative possibilities are endless.

Step 1: Transform Old Chandelier

If you already have a chandelier to work with, you can remove any bulbs or covers. Spray paint or paint the chandelier by hand a color that suits your needs. Good colors that make a chandelier look chic are white, silver and black. Allow the paint to dry completely and repeat if desired. Once the chandelier has dried you are able to paint on designs or use stencils to give it a different look. Leave the chandelier one color for a classy look. Add bulbs and covers is you desire.

Step 2: Make a Base

If you do not have a chandelier that you are able to use, you can simply make your own. To do this, you will need to make a base to hold the fixtures that will hang off the chandelier. Create a medium-sized circle out of wire and tie a string on two sides. This will be the string that will hang the chandelier from the ceiling.

Step 3: Add Decorations

You can use Christmas tree ornament hooks to hang on the base of the chandelier or you can simply hang small strings off of it. Use material that will really catch a person's eye, such as beads, seashells, or other ornaments that will match your home. You will need to make small holes in the decorations to thread a piece of string through and hang them from the base of a chandelier.

Step 4: Hang the Chandelier

Once you have added the decorations to the base of the chandelier, you are now able to hang it up. To ensure it is hung securely, use a stronger nail for a heavier chandelier. Hammer the nail in the ceiling and hang the string that is connected to the base of the chandelier.

Step 5: Paper Chandeliers

If you want to make a paper chandelier, you will need to purchase a stencil pattern to trace onto the paper of your choice. The stencil patterns normally come with a few stencils for each side of the chandelier and for each corner, which are called the filler pieces. Once you have traced all of the required stencils you will need to cut the patterns from the paper. Follow the instructions that come with the stencils to ensure you do everything properly. When the project is finished you will be able to enjoy a delicate paper chandelier.

Chandeliers gives off a very elegant appeal. You can achieve this look by creating your own chandelier with paper, beads or an old chandelier. Create a chandelier that fits your room appropriately and that shows your personality by using things that mean a lot to you and that you are able to find around the house.
